Spay and Neuter
Bunny Lu
Adoptions strongly recommends having your bun spayed/neutered by a
rabbit-experienced vet during puberty (4-6 months of age). This procedure is
essential if your rabbit is to lead a happy and healthy life.
The risk
of reproductive cancer (uterine and/or mammary) is approximately 85% by age 3 if
the female is not spayed during puberty. Many intact does also
suffer from false pregnancies, especially if they have a bunny buddy, so spaying
is necessary to spare girls from that hormonal stress.
The benefits
for a male are primarily behavioral (eliminates spraying and hormone-related
aggression), although males can also develop reproductive cancer.
Research indicates a spay/neuter procedure also helps with litter box
training!
A knowledgeable rabbit vet can perform this procedure with
minimal risk; make sure that your chosen vet has lots of rabbit experience (most
dog and cat vets do not treat rabbits, so ask!). All of the buns
rescued by Bunny Lu Adoptions receive a spay/neuter procedure prior to
adoption. Our special thanks to Blue Ridge Veterinary Associates in
Purcellville, Virginia for assisting us in this endeavor
Note that prices for spay/neuter procedures
are approximately $125-250 in the Washington-DC area.
